As writers, we’re so close to our stories, that sometimes, it’s hard to see what the story needs to make it pop.
That’s where I come in.
With 20 books traditionally published, and 17 years of experience editing fiction, both for individuals and for literary magazines and publishers, I can help you with your picture book, chapter book, or middle-grade. [If you’re looking for my editing services for full-length novels for adults, check out this page for my editing services and testimonials.]
What people are saying:
Shruthi has incredible insight into the child’s perspective in her critiques. She is able to point out text that doesn’t align with a child’s voice and give examples to improve it. She’s a master of snappy language as well as just-right pacing. Her insight from her published books also helps with positioning the manuscript in the market. Her feedback is honest as well as encouraging!
– MeiLin Chan, Author, Monkey Dragon Rabbit!
I’m fortunate to have had Shruthi Rao as a long-time critique partner. She consistently provides thoughtful and insightful feedback that helps me elevate my manuscripts to the next level—from the big picture, down to the line level. Whether you’re feeling stuck or simply want a fresh perspective, I highly recommend working with her!
– Traci Huahn, Author, Mamie Tape Fights to Go to School
Shruthi’s years of experience show through the critique she provided. She gave very detailed and constructive feedback as well as many generic tips that came in handy while revising my other MS. Shruthi was also very prompt and accommodating of my schedule. Overall, it was a great experience, and I highly recommend her to both new as well as seasoned writers.

What I offer:
BIG-PICTURE FEEDBACK
I’ll help you look at your story through the eyes of a child reader, and an agent/editor. Together, we’ll tease out hooks and emotions, and work on plot and structure.
Depending on the manuscript, you can choose between:
- Written notes with high-level comments, suggestions and takeaways. I will also mark errors in language and grammar. But this will not be a detailed line-edit.
- OR
- 45-min discussion call in which I will give you oral feedback and takeaways, and you can get your questions answered in real time.
For Picture Books (fiction) up to 700 words: $60
For Picture Books (nonfiction) up to 1000 words: $75
